Edinburgh's Old Town skyline |
Currently we are in Edinburgh for a few days visiting family and seeing some old friends. On Saturday, to celebrate Niall's birthday, we went out for lunch to the Bailie Bar in Stockbridge, which is on the edge of the New Town. The pub is a favourite of ours and we used to drop in regularly when we lived in Edinburgh. One of it's attractions is the lack of piped music and fruit machines; we prefer pubs without. It has never proported to be a gastro pub but the food is honest. Niall had lamb's liver with bacon and onions and I had a grilled chicken breast which had been coated in a herb crust.
Arthur's Seat |
Afterwards we drove up Arthur's seat--we were a bit too full of lunch to want to walk all the way up-- if you enlarge the photo you'll see people walking or jogging. The weather wasn't brilliantly sunny it at least it wasn't raining!

The WV is bachanne which sounds Scots to me!
A belated happy birthday Niall, we hope you both enjoy your holiday.
Hello Niall and Antoinette:
We love Edinburgh. Such an elegant and vibrant city, full of interesting things to see and do. We can still remember a memorable lunch we had with friends at 'Indigo Yard'. We are not quite sure as to where exactly in the town it was or whether it is still in existence but it was a wonderful experience at the time and lingers on in happy memories with us.
Many belated happy returns to Niall and we hope that you are both continuing to enjoy a lovely time!
Belated condolences to you, Niall, on the increase in age.... I'm sure you can comfort yourself wi'a whisky. And may there be many more anniversaries that require that wee dram!!
@Gaynor - back home now. Hope you had good weather here & sorry to have missed you. It was quite mild, though often gloomy in Edinburgh. Better than the horizontal rain we were expecting!
@Jane & Lance - Edinburgh is great place. We used to live in a basement flat in Regent's Terrace which, when we climbed up to street level had lovely views over to Arthur's Seat. Had a lovely time seeing family and friends.
@Tim - a dram of Highland Park 12 yr old helped soften the blow...
