Edinburgh Ho!

Later today we are off to Edinburgh to see Niall's mum and his sister whose birthday it is on Friday.

Sadly our mode of travel will not be as romantic or stylish as a train in the glory days of rail travel which this poster advertised. Instead we will be taking the overnight car ferry from Ouistreham to Portsmouth and then driving up.

Currently the National Museum of Scotland is holding an exhibition entitled 'See Scotland by Train' of railway posters like this, and hopefully we'll have a chance to go and see it.

Therefore, next posts will probably take a departure from our usual lives here in France and have a Scottish flavour!

Hello Niall and Antoinette:
The exhibition at the National Museum of Scotland looks to be most interesting. The art work associated with travel by rail, particularly in the inter war period, is often outstanding and 'See Scotland by Train' sounds well worth seeing.

We wish you a pleasant journey and a safe return.

Trams!
Waves of nostalgia....

I still remember travelling the West Coast line drawn by thundering steam locomotives...

I'd love to see the exhibition.

Bon voyage! I'm afraid you're likely to find the weather very much the same when you arrive. I do hope you make it to what looks a most interesting exhibition.

When you get back you must come over and see "L'Illusioniste" - a hand-drawn cartoon film featuring Edinburgh, steam trains, the Scottish islands just at the end of the variety era when the trams came to the end of the line too.

That sounds a wonderful exhibition. My husband and I are very fond of railway art. Wonder if I could lure him away to Edinburgh when I get back! Best wishes for a wonderful safe trip!

Bon voyage! Just saw a tv program about Scotland which featured Edinburgh, of course. Enjoy!

@Jane & Lance - journey up was bit dire, very rainy. Encountered huge amounts of surface water and spray on the motorway but otherwise, thankfully, uneventful.

@Fly - sadly never travelled by steam train except 'heritage' North York Moors railway. Would love to do the trip up to Mallaig one day.

@Gaynor- thanks! Hope all your bruises are easing.

@Jean - we came up via Oxford and then M1/M18/A1M so waved in your general direction when we got to N'ham/Derby area :-)

@Pauline - that sounds really interesting so will do! All of Edinburgh is rather like Tours:- huge upheavals for a tram system which is massively over budget!

@Diane - thanks! Weather hasn't really co-operated so far :-(

@Broad - even without the railway poster exhibition the Museaum of Scotland is really worth seeing!!

@Walt - Edinburgh is a lovely city-- loads of lovely buildings, plenty of energy [students] and 'walk-able'.
